Aphasia Centre
More Canadians have aphasia than Parkinson's Disease,
muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis combined. Aphasia
robs people of their ability to use language - it leaves them speechless
and is caused by strokes, brain tumours, and brain injuries. This site
provides information and contacts on this widespread but often misunderstood
condition.

Provides information meetings and establishes support groups throughout
BC to help those affected by Parkinson’s disease. A lending library
for books and videos is available for members.
Alzheimer
Society of British Columbia
Provides support services and education programs locally and provincially
to help those affected by Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

Arthritis Society BC and Yukon Division
Acts in the interest of people affected by arthritis by promoting and
funding research, care, education and advocacy.

Agency
An agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority, which supports
cancer care and research in BC.

and Stroke Foundation BC and Yukon
Promotes understanding, prevention and treatment of heart disease and
stroke.
Multiple
Sclerosis Society of Canada – BC Division
Supports research into multiple sclerosis and provides services and programs
across BC to those affected by MS and their families.
ALS Society
of BC
Provides direct support to ALS patients, their families, and caregivers,
raises funds for patient services and research, and works to increase
public awareness and understanding of ALS.
Osteoporosis
Society of Canada
The British Columbia Division of the OSC provides information and educational
materials, prevention programs and self-management programs in English
and Chinese, personal contact and counseling services for those seeking
assistance, advocacy and a resource library for members.
Diabetes
Society of Canada
Promotes the health of Canadians through diabetes research, education,
service and advocacy. Chapter and regional offices across BC provide access
to local support groups and education programs.
Kidney
Foundation of Canada – BC Division
Provides resources and information about kidneys, including prevention
of kidney disease and treatments.
Canadian
Geriatric Society
Works to promote excellence in the medical care of older Canadians. The
Society strives to promote a high standard of research in the field of
geriatrics/ gerontology and to improve the education provided to Canadian
physicians on aging and its clinical challenges. “Geriatrics Today:
Journal of the Canadian Geriatrics Society” is the official publication

for Elder Law Studies
CCELS is a non-profit organization committed to enriching and informing
the lives of older adults in their relationship with the law; to meet
the increasing need for education and research in relation to legal issues
of particular significance for older adults, and to serve as a national
focal point for this emerging field.

Centre for Geriatric Care
Devoted to enriching the quality of life for the elderly since 1918. Provides
resources and education programs, including innovative online education
courses for healthcare professionals.

Network of BC
Provides a central advocacy body through which seniors' groups in BC,
and people advocating for seniors, can discuss their concerns, take action
when necessary and present their common views to various levels of government.

Agency of Canada Division of Aging and Seniors
Provides federal leadership on health issues related to aging and seniors.
The Division serves as a focal point for information and centre of expertise
in this area.

A national, non-profit, bilingual web-based health information service,
which helps Canadians find information on how to stay healthy and prevent
disease. The network of health information providers includes the Public
Health Agency of Canada, Health Canada and national and provincial/territorial
non-profit organizations, as well as universities, hospitals, libraries
and community organizations.

Provides information to raise awareness of key issues around abuse and
neglect in later life and to assure older adults are treated as full citizens

Association of BC
An organization formed to support, educate and advocate for family caregivers
in British Columbia. The organization co-sponsors and annual Caregiver’s
Conference.

to Care
Provides practical advice for caregivers to help them in the experience
of caring for a loved one.
Caregiver Network Inc
A resource centre created to help caregivers of the elderly and ill. The
organization’s goal is to make the lives of caregivers easier by
providing information, education, personal assistance and support. CNI
provides original and uniquely personal information to help family caregivers
meet the challenges of aging and eldercare.

of Senior Citizens’ Organizations of BC
An umbrella organization made up of various seniors’ organizations
and individual associate member, which provides advocacy on a broad range
of issues effecting seniors and others in BC.

The seniors information page on the Ministry of Health website provides
access to helpful information and resources for seniors and their families,
including the “Information for Seniors” booklet, a guide to
programs and benefits available in BC.

A voluntary organization concerned with educating people about mental
health issues, and changing the way mental illness is viewed and treated
in BC. The association educates, advocates, conducts research, and develops

more effective, and more friendly to all.
The Eden
Alternative
The Eden Alternative is an approach to the care of the aging and disabled
which has been adopted by some residential care facilities to help create
a better social and physical environment and improve the quality of life
for residents. The Eden website provides access to information, books,
audio materials, and videos about this alternative approach to care.
Gentlecare
The Gentlecare system of dementia care focuses on accommodating and supporting
existing levels of function and development among those affected by Alzheimer’s
disease, rather than challenging them to adapt and perform in ways no
longer possible. Gentlecare has been adopted by some residential care
facilities in BC.
Centre
on Aging at the University of Victoria
A multidisciplinary social science research centre established in 1992
to promote and conduct basic and applied research throughout the lifespan.
A variety of publications, including research reports, are available on
their website, many of which are relevant to residential care.
BC Hospice
Palliative Care Association
Defines palliative and hospice care, its history and the philosophy of
‘appropriate death’. The website provides information about
recommended books, videos and workshops and includes links to palliative/hospice
programs in communities throughout BC.
Ontario
Association of Non-Profit Homes and Services for Seniors
An Ontario membership-based organization that has represented not-for-profit
providers of services, care and housing for seniors for over 80 years.
The website has information on publications, news items on residential
care issues in Ontario, publications relevant to residential care facility
operations, and ‘free’ position papers.
Family
Councils – Ontario
The website of an Ontario pilot project on family councils, funded by
the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
Long Term
Care Association of Manitoba
Incorporated in 1959 as a non-profit organization, to represents private
and voluntary personal care homes caring for residents in Manitoba. The
association works to encourage and support continuous pursuit of excellence
in the quality of long term care services to Manitobans.

Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists
A resource centre with fact sheets on various topics, some related to
caring for those with speech and hearing difficulties.

Association of Retired Persons
Website of the well-known Canadian publication concerned with information
and lobbying on matters affecting ‘mature’ Canadians. Provides
access to in-depth studies on health issues, including the state of residential
care across Canada.
Justice Institute of BC
Located in New Westminster, the JI conducts courses and Certificate Programs
in a number of areas. Courses in the Conflict Resolution Program and Centre
for Leadership and Community Program may be offered at sites throughout
BC. Some courses are applicable to family councils and many provide instruction
in skills-development relevant to advocating for a family member in care.
