Co-President
JoAnn Perry is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at the
University of British Columbia (UBC). She is also a Co-investigator at
the Center for Research on Personhood in Dementia Care, funded by the
Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research. JoAnn is a Registered Nurse
and holds a PhD in Nursing, with a focus on aging, from the University
of Washington.
JoAnn has taught care of the elderly for 25 years at UBC and in various
programs in Canada and the United States. Her interest in gerontology,
particularly in the care of elderly persons with dementia and their family
members, focuses on generating new knowledge and connecting research with
practice. There are two main streams to JoAnn’s scholarship in this
area: one is the experience of the family caregiver and the other is the
care of people who have dementia. Some of her work challenges previous
orientations to family caregiving and the most current work is directed
at supporting communication with persons with dementia. JoAnn’s
research is in collaboration with Dr. Jeff Small from the School of Audiology
and Speech Science at UBC. Together they are exploring communication in
the family as well as with health care professionals.
JoAnn served on the ACR Advocacy Committee from 2003-2004 and has been
a Board Member for ACR since 2004.
